This Week's Veg Box: The Teaser

2 min read veg-box teaser

The box hasn’t even arrived yet, but I have the list — and it’s a good one. Fourteen items this fortnight, and there’s a definite theme: it’s dark-leaved and purple-rooted out there.

What’s coming:

  • Beetroot
  • Carrots
  • Charlotte potatoes
  • Kale
  • Mixed tomatoes
  • Red cabbage
  • Red onions
  • Rainbow chard
  • Broccoli
  • Leeks
  • Onions
  • Sprouting broccoli
  • Cavolo nero
  • Rocket

First impressions? That’s a lot of greens. Kale, chard, cavolo nero, broccoli, sprouting broccoli, rocket — six leafy things at once is ambitious even by my new standards. The AI is going to earn its keep this fortnight, because my old self would have wilted them all into the same stir-fry and called it a day.

One small victory before we’ve even started: I managed to swap out the parsnips and swede for red onions and rainbow chard. Sweet root vegetables have never been my thing, and I’d rather not watch good produce go to waste when there are greens (or reds in this case!) that actually appeal.

Some early instincts, before I let the AI loose on it:

  • The red cabbage is asking for something quick and sharp — stir-fried hot with the red onions and a splash of vinegar keeps the colour loud and the whole thing takes ten minutes. Slow-cooked cabbage is somebody else’s Tuesday.
  • Cavolo nero and I have history: it went into a macaroni cheese last time, along with kale, broccoli and cauliflower. All the greens, all the cheese. It was excellent and I make no apologies.
  • The beetroot is the wildcard. Roast it, shave it, or — now that the thought won’t leave — see what the AI says about pairing it with something creamy. Reports to follow.
  • And sprouting broccoli — properly bitter, properly seasonal, properly needs pairing with something sweet or salty to behave.
  • The Charlotte potatoes remain the calm in the storm, though the leeks are giving them ideas.

So the plan: as always, I’ll feed the whole list to the AI and see what comes back, cook the most promising candidates, and post the honest verdicts — the wins, the fails, and the tweaks — as each recipe lands here.

Watch this space. The box arrives shortly.
